A free online event is being held next month to shine a light on how digital technology and scientific expertise are combining to protect and conserve the Hill House.
The National Trust for Scotland (NTS) and Historic Environment Scotland will explain how conservation scientists have used thermographic and microwave moisture surveys to find out the scale of the damage caused to the building’s cement harling by almost 120 years of exposure to rain and salty seaside air.
The house is currently encased in a £4.5m chain mail structure – known as ‘The Box’ – to allow the NTS time to explore ways of protecting the building – regarded as Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s ‘domestic masterpiece’ – in the longer term.
