Helensburgh's Dougie Stewart and Maggie Kinvig of Cardross triumphed in the annual Ben Bouie mixed open at Helensburgh Golf Club.

The mixed pairs competition attracted 50 pairs of golfers on a hot and sunny August day; half of the entries were visitors, but it was local members who dominated the leaderboard.

Dougie and Maggie’s total of 40 stableford points was matched by the all-Helensburgh duo of Alex and Claire Dunlop, but it was Dougie and Maggie, above right, who won the Ben Bouie Trophy on the better inward half.

Alex and Claire, right, did at least have the consolation of winning the Ardmore Trophy, awarded to the best all-Helensburgh pairing.

The handicap podium was completed by Sandy and Shona Bulloch, also of Helensburgh, who amassed 37 points, while the scratch prize also went to a home pairing, Peter and June Haggarty, after their round of 73.

Lady captain June Haggarty presented the trophies and thanked those who made the day a success, especially Taylor Wimpey for their continued support as main sponsor.

Meanwhile, it was the ladies, pictured above, who triumphed in the Walker Cup tournament, the annual team tournament between the Helensburgh club’s gents and lady members.

With husband and wife Peter and June Haggarty as the respective team captains, 13 ties were contested, with two gents playing against two ladies in each one – and the outcome of the match wasn’t settled until the final hole of the final match, with the ladies’ team triumphing by a single hole and taking the bragging rights for the next 12 months as well as the trophy.

Lady captain June Haggarty gleefully accepted the trophy from a magnanimous club vice-captain Tom Foster.
