HEAVY rain forced an early halt to the day’s play in the fourth round of the Tennent’s Winter League at Helensburgh Golf Club on Sunday.
Wet underfoot conditions, a cold wind and increasingly heavy rain didn’t deter no fewer than 96 players from entering the fray, but the deteriorating weather led the organisers to shorten the round to 11 holes before the course became unplayable – a decision much appreciated by the players.
Kevin Robb and Alan Hughes finished in first place after three pairs recorded the same top score of 29 stableford points, with their best score over the final three holes earning them top spot ahead of Gary Potter and Lewis Slee.
They, in turn, recorded a better last six holes than Malcolm Hyatt and Gordon Murdock in third.
Only three players scored twos at the day’s sole nominated hole – the third – with each receiving a dozen Titleist balls.
The lotto bonus ball sheet winner was Calum Kennedy and the score card draw was won by Alan Bell and Steven Donald.
Fingers are crossed for better weather conditions – something missing throughout the competition so far this year – in this Sunday’s fifth round.
