HELENSBURGH Bowling Club welcomed 50 P7 pupils and their teachers from Hermitage Primary last week to try out the sport.

Most of the youngsters had never played bowls before but picked it up very quickly and appeared to really enjoy the morning, the club told the Advertiser.

They were shown how to play by four club coaches and other club members. After learning the basic rules, they then played some games against each other.

The club hopes to encourage more schools and youth groups to spend time at the club and also try a new activity.

They told us: "We are currently trying to encourage anyone over the age of nine to come and give bowls a try at our club.

"We are open to all ages above nine and would like to form a junior section.

"Any youth groups or adults will be welcome to contact the club and arrange a fun session with our coaches.

"At the club, members can play just for fun amongst other members or can enter competitions both in-house and against other clubs in the region and the rest of Scotland.

"Our club has members taking part in the Scottish national championships again this year.

"Bowls is one of Scotlands most successful Commonwealth Games sports and it all starts at local clubs which is why we feel the need to encourage all players."
