Captain’s Day at Helensburgh Golf Club is one of the most popular days in the golf season – and this year proved no different.

Cub captain Tom Foster hosted the day, welcoming all 140 players onto the first tee.

The weather forecast anticipated thunder and lightning – and while thankfully neither made an appearance, there were still plenty of fireworks in the low scoring over a fiery course baked by the dry weather.

The first class section was won by four shots by Cameron Bell, playing 10 shots below his handicap. His score of 46 stableford points, including three birdies in the last seven holes, gave him a four shot victory over runner up Iain Carswell.

Graham Thorley won the second class with 43 points, some seven shots below his handicap, and two points ahead of runner up Iain MacLeod.

The third class was won by Scott Macgregor with an amazing score of 48 points, 12 shots better than his handicap. Runner-up Paul Strettle must have thought his 45 points would have been a winning score.

Dorothy Mickel won the ladies’ competition by a margin of six points from runner up June Haggarty, with her score of 42 points.

The junior competition was tied with Rory Platt and Tom Feeney sharing the prize.

There were also prizes at each of the par threes for the golfer who was closest to the hole, and young Arthur Tynan made sure of his at the tricky 11th by holing his tee shot for his first hole in one.

The dry course undoubtedly contributed to the low scoring, but the quality of golf was as spectacular as the weather.

At the conclusion of the day the members enjoyed a barbecue in the sunshine, with captain Tom generously treating every player to a refreshing drink.
