My column this week focuses on those of us who have had, or are having, problems with their mental health.

I have made a return to my council role earlier this month after having to take time off due to life's events becoming overwhelming,

I will not go into details about what these events were; it just suffices to say that it accumulated and resulted in my in having to take a step back.

I was in the fortunate position of having a supportive family, friends, colleagues, my GP practice, council colleagues and national park officers. Without their help I do not think I would be writing this today.

I thank you all for the support and help you have given me over the last few months and continue to give me now.

I would urge anyone who is feeling overwhelmed with the stresses that life can throw at us to talk with a trusted friend, GP or to the professional services that are out there, which I have highlighted below.

How to access mental health support

Within Argyll and Bute Council's social work department, the mental health team offer assessment and care management for people experiencing mental health difficulties.

This includes undertaking a "personal outcomes plan" which identifies the specific needs of individuals who are experiencing severe or enduring mental health illness and this is done in partnership with health colleagues.

We support people who have or think they may have mental health problems, such as depression, phobias, anxiety disorders or schizophrenia.
