Helensburgh Golf Club held their annual Mixed Pairs Greensomes Competition on Sunday with 70 teams taking part.

The event, sponsored by Murray Waddell, attracted 31 teams from other clubs across Scotland.

The weather was kind to the early starters but later starters had a couple of heavy showers.

First prize and winners of the Ben Bouie Trophy were Jon Simmons of Helensburgh Golf Club and Lynn McNeill of Cardross Golf Club.

Second and winners of the Ardmore Trophy were Lynn and Fraser McCathie from Helensburgh. Third were Steven Walker and Anne Barty from Helensburgh and fourth were Ben Canham and Maria Carling from Helensburgh.

The scratch prize was won by June and Peter Haggarty from Helensburgh. Other prize winners were from Habburn Golf Club, Vale of Leven, Howfoot, and Cardross.

A raffle in aid of St Margaret of Scotland Hospice raised £527.

On Saturday, 93 entrants took part in the July round of the Breingan Medal and McIlwraith Trophy for men aged 55 and over.

Results were:

Division 1: Allister Parlane (1) took first place with nett 65. Second came Alan Birnie (6) with nett 66 and in third place, Graeme Proud (4) with nett 67.

Division 2: David Kick (19) nett 67; Darren Traynor (17) and Philip Armstrong (20) both nett 68; Bill Lawlor (15) and Alan Walker (14) both nett 70.

Division 3: Andrew Dunwoodie (27) had the top nett medal score with nett 63, also winning the McIlwraith Trophy for men over 55.

Craig Ross Smith (28) took second place with nett 70 and in equal third were Jim Purdon (21), Nicolay Petkov (23) and George Mundie (21), all scoring nett 73.

Qualifiers for the medal final on September 3 are Allister Parlane, David Kick and Andrew Dunwoodie.

On the previous Wednesday, 46 gents played their senior midweek medal. Andy Stewart (24) took this month’s honours with nett 66. Iain Work (17) was second with nett 67 and in third place came John Stevenson (27) scoring nett 68.

All three have qualified to play in the final on September 14.
