Helensburgh Ladies RFC travelled to Oban for their first ever league fixture in the Women’s BT National 2 League, losing 38-0 on Sunday.

There was a buzz of nerves and excitement as the ladies walked out onto the pitch together to face Oban who recently dropped down from the League above due to not being able to make games because of a lack of numbers.

Oban put immediate pressure on the visiting side playing their experienced forwards up the middle before managing to quickly move it out to the wing with a couple of near misses.

The Burgh were desperate to prevent a try, trying to tackle them into touch with a try saving tackle from Becca Lloyd.

Oban however continued their impressive attacking play until finally their full back got through and scored the home side's first try towards the posts to make it 5-0.

The pace of the game began to slow down due to the poor weather conditions, making ball handling challenging for both sides and the scrums hard on the slippery ground.

The visitors fought to slow the attacking side down, tackling in pairs and desperately competing in rucks to win and to try and keep possession of the ball.

It was a physical encounter for both sides, with Helensburgh putting up a fight attempting to wear the home side down.

But an Oban centre fought right through the middle to score under the posts which was then successfully converted.

Not long after Oban continued to dictate the play and one of their front row smashed through the Helensburgh defence scoring their third try of the afternoon to make it 17-0.

Scrum-half Rachael Wain was controlling the Burgh side well.

The end of the first half did not seem to move far from the halfway line, Helensburgh never quite managing to break through to the attacking side.

Not long into the second half Oban scored their fourth and fifth tries in quick succession.

Helensburgh feeling the pressure used fly-half Lauren Moy to kick while the speedy backs chased it.

Carruthers and Moy worked together to prevent yet another try.

Helensburgh started to settle into the play at this point with McCloy seeing a chance to break through however Oban’s weighty defence were quick to stop her.

Oban’s strong scrums were tiring the Burgh forwards however the Burgh lineouts were strong and winning when it was their ball every time and successfully getting the ball out quickly.

Helensburgh Ladies next game in the league is at home to Lismore on Sunday, October 9, kick-off is at 2pm.
