THE Babcock 10K race series has become the latest public event to fall victim to the coronavirus outbreak.

The news of the postponement of the annual event, which was due to take place in Helensburgh, Dumbarton and Glasgow in May, comes as little surprise as measures aimed at controlling the pandemic's spread become increasingly stringent.

The organisers hope to reschedule the event for September, though that, too, remains dependent on the lasting impact of the pandemic.

The race series had been due to begin with the Helensburgh 10K on May 7, with the Dumbarton 10K taking place seven days later and the series ending with the Shettleston 10K on Glasgow Green on May 31.

Race series chairman Kevin Johnson said: "A decision has been taken to postpone this year’s Babcock 10k Series from May until new dates which are expected to be in September once the impact of the coronavirus is expected to have subsided.

"This decision was taken based upon advice from the Scottish Government and in turn Scottish Athletics.

"It also takes into account the fact that local authorities have cancelled all bookings for their facilities for the foreseeable future and the need to protect the resources of medical service providers and the emergency services for greater priorities.

"All entries will be carried forward to the new dates and anyone unable to take part as a result of the change in dates can request a refund or a rollover to next year’s series."
